See Ya, Ghetto 305

Time to stop being ghetto and bite the bullet and get myself a new garmin:

The pin fell out of the normal strap on my Garmin 305 earlier this summer.  I bought a replacement band (the ugly velcro strap), but the pin fell out again a couple weeks later.  So, genius that I am, I came up with the idea of using one of my hair ponies to hold the Garmin to the velcro.   It works, but it is digging into my wrist and causing an owie (it is seriously starting to hurt every time I use it now; who knew running could be so dangerous!).  Then this morning the heart rate monitor sensor stopped working.

So I decided to bite the bullet and get a new garmin.  I could opt for one of the newer, sleeker looking ones – but I’ve heard such mixed things about them.  Plus, being so close to Chicago, I don’t want to deal with learning new technology and having a race day freak out b/c I don’t have the right data at my fingertips (I know, I know – I should be running by feel; blah blah blah).   So I’ll stick with the Garmin 305.  I love my 305! Glad I ordered when I did – apparently Garmin discontinued it – so all you 305 lovers out there, better order your replacement one while you still can!

Anyone a former 305 user that loves a different model?

I had the 305, loved it, but it was a bit big and a bit beaten up. I went down to the 210. It does a nice job at being a simple gps, hr monitor, and pacer. It does intervals well, too. At the time I bought it, it was the second smallest garmin next to the 610. My verdict is that it holds the charge well, I can wear it to court and not get strange questions, and does everything simply and well. For the price it is a good deal. That said, I’m planning on upping to a 610 shortly. The features I really want are the auto stop and start, the wireless sync, and the virtual racer. Also, I have really small wrists and it fits just lovely on them.

  2. If you send the old one back in, they will completely refurbish it for $85 (or something like that). I am sending my old one in to get fixed so I have a backup. Jury is still out for me on the 610. There are things I LOVE about it and things I am not so sure about yet. The HR Monitor that comes with it is HORRIBLE though – so hang onto you old one (BTW – you may just need to change the battery).
