Marathon race strategy brought to you by Dove dark chocolate!

Those of you who have been reading this blog for any length of time know that I have a slight Dove dark chocolate problem.  In addition to being delicious, it teaches me lessons.  It talks to me.  Every time I unwrap a piece of it, the messages inside the wrapper speak to me.  🙂

Today, my Dove dark chocolate helped me overcome some nagging doubts and formulate my Lansing marathon race plan.  (I know, some of you are wondering what happened to me giving up dessert until after the marathon;  well, I consider 6 pieces of Dove dark chocolate an afternoon snack to get me through the work day, not dessert.)

Anyway, this morning I had a shitty run.  I ran 6 miles at 9:01 pace and I was winded.  And not feeling it.  Which made me doubt myself and my training.  I mean, WTF?  Winded at a 9:00 pace?  How am I going to run almost a minute faster than that per mile, for twenty six miles???

And, as you can imagine, I have been thinking a lot about my race strategy.  I’ve been talking it over with Coach MB, as well as going over a bunch of pacing and racing ideas with a new running friend.  I have analyzed my data (you lucky readers will get to see it in my training recap in a few days – stay tuned!), gathered info about the course, looked at past marathon data, brainstormed different pacing strategies, etc.  You know, all the usual Type-A marathon runner stuff.

And then, out of no where, two of my Dove dark chocolates spoke to me (again!) and made it very clear what my race day strategy should be.**  When I unwrapped them, they read:

“You are exactly where you are supposed to be.” 


“Forget the rules and play by your heart.”  

Translated:  I shouldn’t freak out over my crappy feeling run this morning!  And: Don’t overanalyze and determine what I should or shouldn’t be running based on my training and current fitness;  Just do what feels right.  Within reason, of course!

So there you have it.  My Lansing marathon race plan:  Have confidence that I am exactly where I am supposed to be with my training and fitness and peaking.  And on race day, forget the rules and run with heart.  

Thank goodness for Dove dark chocolate!

**These same pieces of Dove dark chocolate provided some insight and guidance to my personal life as well.  But this is a running blog, so I’ll keep quiet on that insight.  🙂

  1. I need to go buy a bag of Dove Dark Chocolate. I need some advice for Boston on Monday and I want chocolate that isn’t considered dessert. Loved this post. 🙂

  2. I love it! My half is 11 weeks from today, and I decided that I was going to try and give up sugar until the race. I am already struggling and it is only day one. I want some of those dark chocolates!

I would add one more piece of advice (that is really just sub-advice that falls under the “You are exactly where you are supposed to be” chocolate advice)… “Trust your training plan.” All good training plans are designed with tough weeks/workouts and easy weeks/workouts. The training plan knows that you will have a bad run here an there, but it is designed (with rest weeks and the taper) to get your legs into race form just in time for the race.
