Good news!


Good news!  I’m still alive and kicking after my first group track workout.

And the best news of all:  it wasn’t as scary as I thought it was to run with a group of strangers.  The runners were nice and normal.  Most of them were super speedy.  A couple were slower than me, but working their asses off just like the rest of us.  And the coach was FABULOUS!*

The workout:  1.5 mile warm up, 2 miles all out, 10 minute rest, 3×1 mile intervals at 5 – 8 seconds slower than all out mile pace with 6 minute rest between intervals, 1 mile cool down.

As if the planned workout isn’t hard enough, the Weather Gods decided to intervene and give us an excessive heat advisory today, so even at 6:00 a.m., we were dealing with 73 – 75 degrees and sunny with a gazillion percent dew point.

Results:  8 miles total.  2 miles all out (14:28, but it measured 2.11 by my garmin, so 6:52 pace).  1×3 mile repeats (6:59, 7:11, 7:23)  (but garmin measured each a bit long, so pace says 6:44, 6:56, 7:11)

The pros:

  • I pushed myself harder than I would have if I tried to do this on my own.  I think if I had done it on my own I would have told myself 2 miles all out in the heat/sun would be reasonable at a 7:30 pace and I would have looked at garmin and only pushed myself to 7:30 pace.  Instead, I didn’t look at garmin very often and tried to stay reasonably close to the speedy runners in front of me.
  • I finished the whole workout and it was challenging, but not horrible.  I could have done another mile repeat.  Maybe two.
  • NO leg issues!  I was really happy about this because I was a little nervous that I was getting back into speedy stuff too quickly.
  • My mile repeats this morning were faster than the mile repeats I did a few weeks before Twin Cities (7:09 and 7:15 then, but today was AFTER 2 miles all out!)

The cons:

  • It’s 5 hours later now and I have a MONSTER of a headache.  I can tell its from dehydration and working out so hard in the heat.  (It doesn’t have anything to do with last night’s Buffalo Wild Wings and beer!) Trying to rehydrate now.

    I always get a “heat headache” as I termed them from running hard in warmer weather. Usually anything over 60 when it comes to tempos or speed work.

    They stink! I’ve gotten used to them, but still don’t find them fun. They do let me know that I’ve pushed myself hard.

    I’m glad you are having fun and, yes, runners are all pretty much nice!
