Long Journey . . . . Beautiful Reward

2 weeks til Twin Cities!  Packet info arrived in the mail yesterday with my race number.  F576.  Sounded really familiar, so I checked last year’s number.  F566 last year.  The cover of the packet had a cool saying, “Long Journey . . . Beautiful Reward.”  At first I was thinking, “Cool.  I like that.  26.2 miles is a long journey and crossing that finish line IS a beautiful reward.”  But when I glanced at the packet again later in the day I realized it’s really, to me anyway, about the training cycle being the Long Journey and the whole marathon day itself being the Beautiful Reward.  This time more than ever I really just want to enjoy the marathon.  When I go back and look at my old blog posts, my goals were always:  1) Time goal A; 2) Time goal B; 3) Have fun.   Not this time.  My goal this time is:  1) Have fun.    Whatever time I get, I get.  (Yes, Boston and a PR will be in the back of my mind, but REALLY they so secondary this time around).

I’m going through Book Reading ADD.  I have like 5 books that I’ve started and keep switching between.  A couple marketing type books for work, a fun book, and a couple running books.  I want to finish them all, but I can’t focus on just one.

The marketing books: Socialnomics and Groundswell. Highly recommend Groundswell. Both of them are about the whole social media thing and how to use it successfully in your business.  I need all the tips I can get, now that I’m in charge of lawyering AND running the business.

The fun book: Room by Emma Donoghue.   Picked it up on the recommendation of my favorite author, Jodi Picoult, who tweeted about how great this book is.  So far I love it, but it is very disturbing so I can only handle it in small doses.  And I love the cover of it!

The running books: Once a Runner and Run:  The Mind Body Method of Running by Feel.  I really wanted to like Once a Runner, but I’m having a hard time getting through it.  It’s just not really interesting.  Frankly, it’s pretty boring.  But I’ll finish it.  I just picked up Run yesterday, and I’m excited to read it.  I’ve heard good things about it.

Any other good recommendations to add to my Book ADD issues??!

  1. I like Fitzgerald’s Run – great book!

I like that you are refocusing your goals and making FUN your first goal. I’m excited to see what happens when you aren’t as focused on the time aspect. I have to say, looking back, that both of my past marathons were first and foremost, fun. I really enjoyed both experiences and the people around me that I was running with, whether I knew them or not.

couldn’t disagree more with Jill…Run could have been about 1/2 of it’s length because he seemed to repeat the same thing over and over and over and over. Some of the ideas he presents have merit and need to be explored but hard to get through.

Once A Runner is worth it.
